Varoufakis controversial interview to NewStatesman

Former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis gave an interview certain to raise eyebrows to British political magazine Newstatesman where he admits for the first time that during the previous months he not only had a Grexit in mind but had suggested to the government to issue a parallel currency (IOU) and proceed to a haircut of Greek bonds held by the ECB if the lenders dared to close banks.
According to Mr. Varoufakis, when the prevalence of NO in the referendum of July 5became known, six members of the government were invited to vote on the plan. Only two voted in favor, though. Four voted against and Mr. Varoufakis could not convince Mr. Tsipras. Consequently, his resignation from the government was inevitable.
"That evening the government decided that the desire of the people, that resounding NO, did not have to activate my plan," said Mr. Varoufakis in his interview.
"On the contrary, it should have led to significant concessions. At the meeting of the political leaders, with our Prime Minister accepting that whatever happened, whatever the other side would do, and not react by clashing with them. That basically means that you stop negotiating ... "
