Wildfire on Laconia burns villages

Fire fighting forces have been fighting an unequal battle with flames since 3.45 am to limit the fronts of a fire that erupted in Laconia, and in strong winds up to 8 Beaufort.
Already the villages evacuated Faraklo, Lehi, and Agios Nikolaos as well as a camping site and a children's camp have been evacuated to a safe area. The flames crossed the village of Agios Nikolaos where according to accounts it burned houses, and through the traditional village Paradisi, and reports indicate that they have burned homes at Faraklo.
The battle is being fought by 150 firefighters with 85 vehicles, firefighters and civilians with water tanks and tractor, while two planes and one helicopter are assisting from the air. Also, a group of 14 fire rangers on foot, and four vehicles of the Municipality have joined the fight. Two more aircraf are expected from Thessaloniki and a Super Puma helicopter will arrive from "Eleftherios Venizelos" carrying 10 men of EMAK rescue group.
