Main opposition leader given mandate to form government

Greek President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos gave a mandate to main opposition leader Vangelis Meimarakis to form a government, late on Thursday night, following the resignation of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after a televised statement in which he asked Greeks to give him a clear mandate in national elections.

Meimarakis received the mandate by email at 00:07 (local time) on Friday morning.

In his response letter, he said he would visit the president to receive the mandate in person, as the Greek Constitution does not foresee the receipt of an order to form a government through email.

Meimarakis met with the president on Friday morning and then went on to meet the president of parliament Zoe Kostantopoulou.
