No teachers for 272 schools

On Greece's easternmost island, Kastelorizo, schools have no teacher and basically did not open yesterday.

Neither did schools on Teledos, Halki, and Agathonisi. The situation is the same in 37 schools in the prefecture of Heraklion, 52 schools in the Cyclades, 35 on Evia.

In all 272 schools across the country remained closed yesterday, highlighting the plight of the Greek state. "What can one say; I think the mere fact that the school has no teacher says everything about the interest and readiness of the Ministry of Education and whether it is consistent with its obligations,"said deputy mayor of Agathonisi John Kanellis speaking yesterday to Kathimerini. Overall, the gaps in primary education are about 14,500, more than the initial estimates of 14,000.

Including teaching gaps in secondary education, the total number of vacant positions exceeds 21,000. According to the ministry, a total of 272 kindergartens, primary schools and special education habe no teachers and can not operate.

Based on the data of the elected representative of the Central Staff Council of Primary Education in the Ministry of Education, Vasilis Paligiannis, gaps in primary education amount to 14.499. Specifically, there are 10,796 vacancies in primary and nursery schools (3,640 teachers, 1660 nursery school teachers, 1,161 English and other educational specialists), 1,822 in schools for special education and 1,881 vacancies in various regions.
