Sbokos gets life for defense procurement kickbacks
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The Three-Member Court of Appeal for Felonies opined that Yannis Sbokos, Antonis Kantas and Nikos Leontaritis are guilty for kickbacks in the armament program "Hermes 2" when Akis Tsohatzopoulos was defense minister.
The court handed a sentence of life imprisonment for Yanis Sbokos and 25 and 20 years, respectively, to Antonis Kantas and Nikos Leontaritis, recognizing for the last two mitigating circumstances: the practical repentance and good behavior after the fact, respectively.
The three defendants submitted a request for suspension of their sentences to the Court of Appeals. The court ultimately did not accept Sbokos' request to suspend the appeal, describing it as unlawful, while for Kantas and Leontaritis it accepted bail and prohibition to leave the country and the responsibility to visit local police station 3 and 2 times respectively. This means that they will stay free up until thedecision on appeal.
Regarding the responsibilities of Akis Tsohatzopoulos these were turned down under the Law on ministerial responsibility, while the fourth accused Zacharias Androulakis has died.
