The Central Archaeological Council (CAC) on Tuesday gave its blessing to plans for the opening ceremony of the 33rd Athens Authentic Marathon on the site of the ancient battlefield, and within the archaeological site containing the burial mound (tumulus) of the fallen Athenians.
A ceremony, organised by the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) and the municipality of Marathon, will be held on the afternoon of Nov. 7 and will be broadcast by Greek state television.
The same site has hosted the opening ceremony for the marathon since 2007.
The ancient battlefield of Marathon lies east of Athens proper.
