Thousands run in the Athens Classic Marathon

More than 43,000 people run in the 33d Athens Classic Marathon on Sunday the 42,195 km of the classical route from the famous tomb to Panathenaic Stadium, of the first Olympics in modern times, following the same distance that messenger Fidippides covered after the homonymous battle against the Persians in 490 BC

“The Athens' Marathon is the most distinguished of all because is unique and authentic,” Attica local governor Rena Dourou said from the Marathon Tomb, adding that is important for Greece to promote a positive image and the ideal of humanitarianism amid the economic crisis.
Greek runner Christopher Merousis, with 2 hours 21 minutes 22 seconds, was the winner for the third consecutive time in the men’s competition, while the Japanese athlete Minori Hayakuri with 2 h52.41 finished first in the women’s category.
