Social Security reform plan briefing

The social security and pension reform will top the agenda of talks between government and its lenders.

The Minister of Labor, Giorgos Katrougalos, briefed political leaders on the new social security and pension plan yesterdayday, and also brieedf the President of the Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos.

Greek government will officially face again its lenders in a new round of negotiations on January 14 when Euro Working Group meeting is scheduled. Its only ‘red line’ would the protection of the main pensions, while Greek government will propose alternative sources of revenue during the negotiation talks and it will seek a compromise solution in certain main issues such as the reduction of supplementary pensions.

During the first week of the year, the government, which aims to submit the finalized draft of its pension reform plan to Greece’s creditors ahead of negotiations that are certain to be tough.

In comments published on Sunday, Tsipras said his government will not give in to “unfair” demands.

“We will honor the agreement to the letter but without accepting unfair demands,” he told Real News, referring to the terms of Greece’s third bailout.

He added that the agreement offered Athens a certain level of flexibility, noting that “we have no obligation to find the money exclusively from pension cuts.”
