Tension escalates on Kos Island due to hotspot construction. Today New Democracy President Kyriakos Mitsotakis visits Lesvos. Several groups have planned a protest near Piraeus port against the creation of hot spots on these islands.
In an effort to de-escalate the tension between the residents of the island of Kos and the government on the construction of the hotspot, the island’s mayor, Giorgos Kyritsis, sent a letter to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras asking him to withdraw the police forces.
Mr. Kyritsis calls the government to withdraw the police forces guarding the military camp where a hotspot is being constructed so as to de-escalate the situation.
He also asks the government to withdraw its decision about the construction of the hotspot and discuss the proposal of Kos municipality to create instead a center of identification for migrants who would depart from the island within 24 hours.
