No pressure for tight deadlines on Cyprus issue during Obama visit
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Greece's steadfastly supports the abolition of the anachronistic regime of guarantees and the departure of Turkish troops from Cyprus, so that the solution given to the Cyprus problem is just and viable, Greek government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on the Cyprus television station RIK on Thursday.
Asked about U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Athens and the talks on the Cyprus issue, Tzanakopoulos said the most salient aspect of the visit was the lack of pressure on Athens to agree to "extremely tight deadlines with regard to the progress of the talks".
"We consider this exceptionally positive. And in this sense, we consider that the deliberations between all sides should continue, so that we arrive at a multilateral summit. The necessary requirements for this do not, however, exist at this time," the spokesman added.
Tzanakopoulos also noted the "excellent meeting" held between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades in Athens on Wednesday.
"President Anastasiades gave the Greek prime minister an in-depth briefing on the deliberations and the negotiations held in Switzerland. The Greek government once again reaffirmed its support for the effort to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem and, apart from that, the two leaders agreed to be in constant communication and coordination, as in the previous period," he said.
