German authorities open new kickbacks case involving German firms in Greece

Bremen prosecuting authorities have charged four Germans and one Greek as suspects for bribing Greek officials for defence contracts, according to a Deutsche Welle report on Thursday.

The story was broken by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), citing sources.
According to the paper, the five former associates of the defence industry firm Rheinmetall Defense Electronics paid kickbacks to Greek officials between 1998 and 2011 in order to secure a contract for the delivery of the Asrad air defence system, as well as the sale of a firing system for Leopard 2 tanks delivered by the German company Krauss-Maffei-Wegman.
The newspaper said the case was considered particulary serious, involving bribes of about 3.3 million euros.
