Politico: Heavily indebted Greece asks for money from the World Bank

A new loan to Greece for combating long-term unemployment and boosting competitiveness, as well as the protection of vulnerable sectors, has been revealed by Politico.

Indeed, Politico notes pointedly that this Greek request would further aggravate the debt-ridden Greek economy.

According to the report, the country's rescue package could become more complicated, and if the request is accepted by the World Bank, the country will sink another debt at a time when the government continues to struggle with the terms and conditions of the current rescue package, worth 86 bn. euro.

"The Greek government has asked the World Bank to provide technical and financial assistance to address the pressing challenges including long-term unemployment, economic competitiveness, growth and social protection," said a representative of the World Bank.

"In accordance with the procedures of the World Bank, any final decision on granting loans will be subject to approval by the board of directors of the bank," he added.

"Preliminary talks were made but we can not confirm the request," said Greek government source, according to Politico.

Sources close to the Deputy Minister of Labour, Rania Antonopoulos, essentially confirmed the Politico reports suggesting that the government's thoughts are to get a boost from the World Bank through funding and expertise.
