Eight more suspicious parcels destined for Europe found

Well-known officials, mainly holding positions relating to economics and finance in European governments or the European Union, as well as in international economic organizations in various European countries appear as the recipients of the eight new suspicious parcels located by the anti-terror police at an assorting center of the Greek post office in Kryoneri, police sources said on Monday.

According to the sources, the supposed senders in these packages are university economics professors and economists, at least one of which has served in a government position in the past.
Last week, a parcel with explosives directed to German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was intercepted at the ministry’s mail office, while another exploded in the hands of a female employee at the offices of the International Monetary Fund in Paris. These packages cited two New Democracy officials as alleged senders.
Anti-terror police have no doubt that the two parcels that reached their destination and the eight new ones are from the same batch, although Greek anarchist group Conspiracy of Fire Cells claimed responsibility only for the package sent to Schaeuble. Authorities are waiting for the proclamation which the group said it will send to explain the act.
It is believed the packages which were located today delayed in reaching the Kryoneri post office because of the area they were posted from and the intervening weekend. Anti-terror officers were stationed at the assorting office monitoring the parcels and thought they were suspicious because of the names written on them.
A meeting is currently underway at the Citizens Protection ministry, chaired by Minister Nikos Toskas.
