Fire burns eastern Attica for second day

Firefighters fought an overnight battle with the flames in Anavyssos in order to cope with the fire that has been burning from around five in the afternoon of Monday, in a forest area in Agios Panteleimonas, on Skordi hill.

On the other hand, Saronida's front, which was most worrying as it burned near homes, is in better shape, on Tuesday.

Throughout their efforts, the fire brigade was hindered by the inaccessibility of the area, but also the strong winds that made their work hard.

"The work of the fire brigade is hampered by the difficult weather conditions due to the strong winds and the terrain. Firefighting forces are making concerted efforts to delimit the perimeter of the fire and limit dangerous active fronts to prevent it from expanding, "the Fire Department said in a statement yesterday, urging the residents of the area not to make unnecessary movements, Which may hinder the work of firefighters.

Shortly after 11 in the evening, the fire reached the coast of Saronida, causing the traffic to be interrupted. A little later, however, the front was successfully dealt with. Nevertheless, during the night the fire was burning near homes, and the firefighting forces continued to work by creating fire zones.

At the moment, 75 firefighters, 30 vehicles, 25 firefighters on foot, 11 volunteer vehicles, 14 municipality water carriers and 8 of the Attica Region have assisted in the area, which has also boosted firefighting forces with 2 heavy duty machinery suitable for earthworks . Yesterday until the last light of day, six helicopters dropped water, and Tuesday morning flights started again with 2 aircraft and 3 helicopters to make low flights to the aid area Resolving decisively the ground firefighting forces in the difficult effort to control the fire, which is now away from a residential area.

The fire broke out at about 17:00 on Monday from Kalyvia Thorikou and quickly spread to the south, helped by the strong northeast wind. Although so far the causes of the fire remain unknown, information indicates that it started from a plot of land on Tenedos Street, where olives and rubbish were present.
