- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
In a mafia-style hit, long-term convict Vassilis Stefanakos was shot dead with a Kalashnikov assault rifle a little after 7pm in Athens on Wednesday on Athinon Avenue in the Chaidari district.
Details of his murder are not yet clear. Stafanakos had been released from prison one and a half years ago, under the provisions of a law designed to decongest prisons by releasing inmates that had served a percentage of their sentence..
According to initial reports, two men on a motorcycle, pulled up to the unsuspecting Stefanakos as he he entered the car, and before he could lock it, they opened the door and emptied a clip from the gun, firing a total of 22 rounds, of which 15 hit Stefanakos, killing him instantly.
Police are focusing their investigations on underworld personalities, and are running ballistic tests to determine if the weapon has been used in other crimes.
Stefanakos had, in the past, been found guilty of a host of crimes, including extortion, racketeering, conspiracy to murder, money laundering, among others.
