EU General Affairs Council draws Turkish ire
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The conclusions of the EU General Affairs Council, which blasted Turkey's new authoritarianism, drew angry remarks from Ankara.
Omer Celik, with successive posts, attacked the European Union, referring both to the issue of the two Greek soldiers detained in Adrianople, as well as to Ankara's relations with Athens and the Cyprus problem.
The Turkish European Affairs Minister described the text as "historical" because it shows the confusion of the EU while noting that the text is devoid of vision, has nothing to do with events, is full of contradictions and shows that the EU "is hostage to an anti-Turkish mentality".
"These conclusions, on the one hand, underline the independence of the judiciary and, on the other, give direct messages to the judiciary expressing expectations for the two Greek military and other EU citizens whose judicial cases are in progress," Celik said in a statement.
"We can not take seriously the EU's positions on Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, which are far from objectivity, are biased and rely on an outdated notion of neighborhood solidarity rather than legality," the Turkish minister wrote on his account.
He also accused the EU of failing to honor the commitments it made on 18 March. "We can not accept this selective relationship in which the EU sees Turkey as a key partner in issues such as immigration, terrorism, transport and energy that benefit the Union, but at the same time it avoids honoring its own of promises and commitments, "he added.
"It is tragicomical that the European Council - which is a hostage of members ruled by the extreme right - argues that Turkey has moved away from the EU. This can not be taken seriously," he concludes. "We want to be an EU member representing a Europe of values. An EU in which the far-right is in power and moving away from its founding values itself will not be able to promise a future for its members as well as for the candidate members. "
