Severe weather bashes northern Greece
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Residents in Vrasna and Stavros, Thessaloniki, but also in Chrysoupolis, Kavala are assessing the destruction to homes and property.
The images after the deluge that hit the areas yesterday and this morning is shocking. Residents in despair are faced with devastation of almost biblical dimensions and are trying to salvage what they can.
In Vrasna, the images are unprecedented. The beach today looks like the areas where hurricanes have just passed.
Roads disappeared, the underground pipelines came to the surface, the beach dissolved, the courtyards of the houses and the streets were filled with mud and debris.
Retaining walls and fences collapsed, and a house suffered irreparable damage as it apparently fell and was demolished.
Characteristic of the fury of water coming down to the beach of Vrasna yesterday is the fact that ... they uprooted a swimming pool!
Also, the images of cars carried off by the waters to the beach and sinking in the sand, or buried in the mud.
