Lipsi is the first city in Greece to remove plastic bottles

As impossible as it may have seemed, it was thanks to the mayor's initiative to install on the island a machine that turns brackish water from the island's water supply network into potable water.

Within three months of operation the machine has been estimated producing a quantity of water equivalent to 50,000 1.5 liter plastic bottles!

The mayor's announcement:

"New standards are laid down by the innovative and cost-effective methods used in Lipsi for the supply of households of this enchanting destination with excellent quality drinking water. Following the immediate intervention of the Mayor and the submission of a request by the Municipality of Lipsi, the Region of South Aegean funded the supply of water treatment equipment processing the brackish water from the island's network, providing reliable solutions of high standards to the growing needs of both the local population and tourists. More analytically, the machine includes a prefilter, decontamination, filtration and dechlorination systems, a reverse osmosis water treatment system, treatment, storage, disinfection and automatic dispension of drinking water.

Already, in the first three months of operation of the water kiosk, the results are impressive. The plant in question produced a total of 75 cubic meters of water for households in special containers purchased for drinking water in their homes, accounting for approximately 50,000 bottles of one and a half liters, while the preferential Drinking water price of tested clean drinking water is set at one euro per 20 liters. "In this way, a double goal is achieved, on the one hand," relieving "households from the cost of purchasing bottled water, and now they have significantly lower amounts (about 1/10) that can be used for valuable social goods and, on the other hand, thousands of plastic bottles, which would otherwise be a one-way street, "says the Mayor of Lipsi, Mr. Fotis Mangos, who attaches great importance to the measures of constant improvement of the living standards of the locals and tourists of the area: "Lipsi entering a new era and it requires constant alertness and vigilance. The obvious increase in tourist traffic to the island of the goddess Calypso this year, following the coordinated actions of the Municipality for promotion and development, pose new challenges. We are creating strong foundations for the structure we are building. Actions for organized solid waste management, our award-winning recycling initiatives, and the developments expected in desalination, are part of the dynamic policy implemented by the Municipality in collaboration with the local community and a large number of stakeholders."

The Municipality of Lipsi warmly thanks the South Aegean Region for the cost of supplying the unit, the consumers for virtually universal response, as well as the bottlers who showed exemplary understanding and unmoving this innovation which has deprived them of sizable revenue, but which was a "breath" for households ".
