The first 14-hour operational flight of the unmanned aircraft (HERON 1) operated by FRONTEX for 600 hours of flight in a pilot operation, was completed on 25 September, according to a release from the Hellenic Coast Guard.
This UAV, based at the Air Force base of Tympaki (Crete), will carry out maritime border surveillance operations under the Joint European Operation "POSEIDON", which is being conducted on a continuous basis from May 2008 under the coordination of the Hellenic Coast Guard and Hellenic Police, and under the supervision of FRONTEX.
Through this exercise, the Coast Guard becomes the first EU Member State service to use such an operational tool to police the maritime field and combat cross-border crime.
