- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
An improvised homemade explosive device exploded outside the political office of Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis in central Athens late Tuesday.
The device was made using small gas canisters and was placed outside the office door on the fourth floor of the apartment building, housing the minister's office at 10, Amerikis Street. The explosion and subsequent fire only caused minor damage to the building.
The attack was condemned by government parties, as well as Independent Greeks, and main opposition SYRIZA. Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou noted that such "cowardly attacks" cannot harm democracy. He added "Democracy is neither intimidated nor terrorized."
Main opposition SYRIZA in its announcement called the attack "an absolutely condemnable act", adding that that such acts contribute to misleading society.
