Thessaloniki: Migrants camp in Aristotelous square
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The formerly clean and well kept, emblematic, Aristotelous Square, in Thessaloniki, has been transformed into a refugee camp, in recent days.
As can be seen in a video posted by a woman on Twitter, immigrants have set up their snleeping bags in the middle of the square.
Immigrants and refugees slept there last night, while some even used the benches of the square, leaving no room for anyone to sit down.
"Tragic scenes are currently unfolding in Aristotelous Square outside the White Tower police station," said the internet user who published the video on Saturday afternoon.
About 50 refugees from Iran and Iraq, as reported, are waiting for the police to arrest them and provide them with the necessary documents so they can request asylum.
This is not the first time that such an incident is recorded in the heart of Thessaloniki. Recently, migrant groups have been gathering outside the White Tower police station to be arrested.
One immigrant speaking to Voria.gr said that he and his family stayed for a few days at the refugee shelter in Diavata, where the situation was very poor.
