Roma attack police after recogizing arresting officer

Two police officers fell victim to an attack by a group of Roma, on Thursday night, at the crossroads of Piraeus and Kifissos streets in Renti, during a routine check.

A patrol crew went to check out a car that had loud music in which two Roma were under the influence of alcohol. Members of the camp reacted and began to throw stones against the police, while some shot in the air to intimidate them.

Police officers also shot in the air. The men of EL.AS. were injured in hands, feet and head, while six Roma were arrested.

"The patrol's radio did not work to call the police to help, and finally one of them managed to communicate with the center via a cell phone," Stratos Mavroidakos, General Secretary of Special Guards, told ANT1 television.

"The two police officers stopped a car to check it at the junction of Piraeus and Kifissos streets, outside a Roma camp," he said.

Indeed, as Mr Mavroidados noted, "one of the occupants recognized a police officer who had previously arrested him and had led him to prison. Then he attacked him, while other Roma ran from the camp, and attacked the two police officers and injured them."

According to the information, the first assailant had been arrested by one of the officers present a few months ago, following a robbery of a Pakistani national, whom he had injured with a knife, and had been released through the notorious Paraskevopoulos law for prison decongestion.
