Tender to make Patras-Rio railway underground in January

The Minister of Infrastructure, Christos Spirtzis, announced the auctioning of the new double-rail line Rio-Agios Dionysios in Patras next January, after a meeting with the Mayor of Patras, Mr. Peliteidis. As noted, there was a commitment to laying the line underground and after a study carried out by ERGOSE it proved to be technically feasible.

Mr. Spritzis stressed that "we are talking about a 6.5-kilometer section of complete underground railroad. The month we were delayed, we were in negotiations with the bodies of the European Commission and we also found funding. This project will cost an additional 45 million. So the funding of the project has been finalized. The appreciation we have from ERGOSE's services - here is the Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Studies and I want to thank them for this effort - is that at the end of January we will have the tender for the implementation of this project. "

The Minister of Infrastructure also talked about the redevelopment that will be carried out on the current existing ground line, saying that "for the area above the ground there will be a mixed committee from the Ministry, ERGOSE and the Municipality of Patras in order to agree how this area above the line will be utilized. The reconstruction will take place along the length of 6.5 km. As the mayor said, they think in the Municipality that there will be a cycle path, greenery and spaces for social activities. We will look at these options, and the Technical Chamber will also participate. "

Spitzis also stressed the great change that this great project will bring, and in completing his statements he said that "when we realize what we are announcing today and designing for St. Dionysius, for steady track means, Patras will be a different city, with a real coastal front - not just on the map - for its citizens and a definitive solution to the traffic problem."

According to the figures revealed by the Minister, one of the new dual lines, will also support metric gauge track lines in order to connect the new line with the old line but also to maintain the operation of the Patras suburban railway during the works. It could also link the future extension of the Suburban railway to Kato Achaia and Pyrgos.

The project will reach a cost of 300 million euros and will be in the largest part financed by the EU. A new generation of railway projects, will include the complete renovation of all the stations in the above section, while for Agios Dionysios there are plans for a new ultramodern terminal that will cover the needs of the city.

In the second phase, it is planned to extend the line to the new port and Agios Andreas, which will also cover the needs for freight transport.
