On Monday, December 3, exercise JACKAL STONE 18 begins in Greece. The exercise aims at enhancing the interoperability of American and Allied forces in the design and execution of interdisciplinary joint operations, focusing on Special Operations.
The exercise is planned and performed by the US SOCEUR in cooperation with allied countries, aims at training US forces in incidents of terrorist attacks and the type of missions executed in Afghanistan and Iraq , for the elimination of terrorist networks.
The exercise is clearly military inscope. In the perception of the US, American interests can be targeted by terrorists in all countries and seas of the world. And because the US Armed Forces have a global response capability, such incidents will be tackled by the Special Forces Force. This is precisely the ability to respond, SOCEUR seeks to "sharpen" with JACKAL STONE's annual exercise, with the cooperation of allied and friendly countries.
The first contacts for JACKAL STONE 18 began last spring with the participation of officers of the National Defense General Staff, based on the Interdisciplinary Management of Special Operations (ICCAT), which began to process the data with American colleagues.
The exercise scenario provides for a terrorist attack on a cruise ship and anti-terrorist operations, the first one on an island in Souda and the second one in the city of Heraklion. General responsibility is in the hands of the US administration of Souda, while for the Greek side it is in the hans, primarily,of Greek police.
