Greek judiciary dynamic duo

Two women stand out on the Greek judicial scene, searching the very darkest corners of the most sordid cases, and daring to come up against powerful interests: Eleni Raikou and Popi Papandreou.

The two judicial crusaders that dealt with such significant cases like arms kickbacks, fixed matches, the Tsohatzopoulos case, Proton Bank, have again come into the limelight, this time by handling the Hellenic Postbank case.

Eleni Raikou

Eleni Raikou is the first prosecutor against corruption, appointed as such in the newly created post in the spring of 2013. Up until then she was head of the Athens Prosecutor's Office. She was born in 1962 and graduated from the Athens Law School.

In 1993 she became part of the judiciary. Seven years later she became the first woman to take over the helm of the Athens Prosecutor's Office. As she found out there were many unsolved cases concerning corruption. This prompted her to establish an Economic Crime Bureau.

She handled very high profile cases that culminated in jailing former minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos, and banker Lavrentis Lavrentiadis, while she also dared to open the fixed football match case. She also handled the case of worker Konstantina Kouneva who was assaulted with acid for her unionist activities. She is married to an army doctor and has two children.

Popi Papandreou

Popi Papandreou, 36, is the other iron lady of Greek justice. She had in the prosecutor's office just three years when she was called upon to investigate the rigged football match case. She dealt with preliminary investigations that led to the uncovering of three cases.

Ms Papandreou, hails from Sykies in Arta, but grew up in the Patisia district of Athens. She studied law and graduate studies in penal law, she is currently in the PhD program at the Athens Law Schools, and entered the judiciary in 2008.

She was one of the first persons that Eleni Raikou selected for her Economic Crime Bureau, and their collaboration has bore significant results. She has written books on legal issues. Her appearance is still something of a mystery since she rarely appears in public.
