Themis Marinos, the last of the Gorgopotamos saboteurs passes, 101

The Greek parachutrooper who participated in the heroic demolition of the Gorgopotamos Bridge in 1942, left life at the age of 101.

He was born in Zakynthos in 1917. He was married with three children. He was an economist, reserve artillery officer, para-commando. In 1940 he fought on the Greek-Albanian front. In 1941 he fought on Crete. He fled to Egypt with a submarine and joined the 1st Greek Brigade. he served at the Liaison Office under Prince Petros, at the British Specialized Training Center in Palestine.

In 1942 he participated in the British parachute team that landed in Greece and blew up the Gorgopotamos railway bridge with the help of EDES and ELAS guerillas interrupting theAxis supply lines to North Africa.

Early in 1944 he returned to the Middle East and in April he was appointed Chief of Special Operations Mission (codenamed "Dastard") in the German-occupied Ionian Islands, which lasted until the end of November 1944. From 1945 to 1949 he was a member of the International Commission of Control of Bulgaria and a liaison of the Balkan Committee of Observers of the UN during the Greek Civil War.

He worked professionally at TWA airlines, the Ministry of Coordination, SEK (OSE) as Deputy Chief Financial Officer, ETEBA as a consultant and the Investment Bank as Chairman. He worked abroad at the UN (Far East), Iran, the World Bank (Ethiopia, Zaire) and K. Doxiadis (Ghana, Libya).
