Greek shipowners first in new ship purchases
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
With large investments in container ships and tankers, in 2018, Greek shipowners once again became champions in investment activity, and strengthened their position on the international market.
In particular, $ 4.6 billion of capital were spent by Greek shipowners for the purchase of 305 vessels, with a total capacity of 28.22 million tons dwt, more than any other country in 2018.
Characteristic is the preference of Greek shipowners in large ship , which offer greater economies of scale, as evidenced by the fact that the 28.2 million capacity added to the Greek-owned fleet was more than twice the size of the competition. In total, 1,628 ships of all types, with a total capacity of more than 90 million tonnes dwt, were purchased worldwide in 2018, costing almost $ 20.5 billion.
According to figures, provided byVesselsValue, an international ship valuation company, based on the value of the funds spent, Norwegian shipowners came in second place worldwide in 2018, investing a total of $ 2.76 billion, acquiring 113 vessels, with a capacity of just 5.3 million tonnes.
The Chinese were third globally, based on the value of the ships they acquired ($ 2.5 billion), but second in terms of number and capacity with 247 units and 15.4 million tonnes respectively. A total of 20.4 billion dollars were invested worldwide in 2018 to acquire 1,628 ships with a capacity of 90 million tonnes dwt.
