The Golden Line metro in Doha -a project built by an Aktor-led international consortium- officially launched its operations a few days ago in Qatar. It is the biggest metro project undertaken by a Greek construction company abroad and one of the largest projects by a Greek company globally, with a budget of more than 3.0 billion US dollars.
The Aktor-led ALYSJ consortium also included India’s Larsen & Toubro Limited, Turkey’s Yapi Merkezi Insaat Ve Sanayi A.S και Sezai Turkes Feyzi Akkaya Marine Construction STFA and Qatar’s Al Jaber Engineering LLC.
The Golden Line metro included the construction of 23.3 km of underground tunnels and 10 underground metro stations of high architectural, aesthetic and luxury, using the latest automation and electro-machinery systems.
Construction of the metro line was a major challenge as plans had to be adjusted to Doha’s particular geological environment, draining 129 million cubic meters of water from the region and using more than 1 million cubic meters of cement and around 171,400 tons of iron. A total of 13,580 workers from 58 different countries worked in the project.
The Golden Line is designed and built so that it reflects in a modern way the cultural heritage, tradition and environment of Qatar.
Aktor Qatar WLL, Aktor’s subsidiary in Qatar, is also leading a consortium with Como Facilities Management Services in a 20-year contract for the maintenance of metrol system in Doha, a contract worth 517 million euros. The Doha metro has a total length of 100 km, with 37 ground and underground stations, along with the Tram network in the city.
