- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Thousands of Greeks have descend from every part of their islands in Chios and Lesvos to demonstrate against the uncontrolled flows of primarily illegal immigrants arriving from Turkey.
The residents of the islands declare their frustration regarding the unbearable situation.
The markets are closed as almost everyone participates in the demonstrations.
Today, the regional governor and mayors of the northern Aegean islands will have contacts with the government to convey their demands and discuss solutions to the problems created by the islands with migratory waves. The appointment was scheduled for 10am. It finally started at 10:15, with representatives of the northern Aegean islands meeting with State Minister George Gerapetritis and Minister for Immigration and Asylum Notis Mitarakis.
Yesterday, Northern Aegean regional governor Costas Moutzouris said: "We want our islands back, we want our lives back and not more warehouses for distressed souls."
