Government mulling floating dam to stem migrant flows

Government spokesman Stelios Petsas cited the government's use of a floating dam, saying it aims to prevent immigrants from approaching the Greek islands off Turkey's nearby coast.
“Greece has thousands of kilometers of coastline. We are trying to strengthen our borders by various means. Within this framework we are also considering the possibility of procuring floating dams at certain points. We must first see if it can safely deliver the results we want," the government spokesman told ANT1.
According to Mr. Petsas, the government is moving ahead with issues of accelerating asylum procedures and returns. "Every Friday we will have returns," he said, adding that the goal is 10,000 returns in 2020.
Referring to the structures, he stressed that closed structures will be created and those open will be closed. "It should be understood by all that we guard our borders," the government spokesman said.
It is recalled that the Ministry of National Defense posted a call for tender for the direct purchase of equipment and machinery for the installation of a 2,700-meter floating dam system on government procurement site "Diavgia".
