The international media are talking about threats of EU sanctions against Turkey if it does not stop provoking the Eastern Mediterranean.

Referring to the results of the marathon meeting of the Summit, Reuters reports that "the European Union can impose sanctions on Ankara if the Turkish" provocations and pressures "continue in the Eastern Mediterranean." The article quotes Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as saying that the EU wants a positive and constructive relationship with Turkey that is both in Ankara's interest and Brussels' expectation "to refrain from unilateral action. "If such actions are repeated by Ankara, the EU will use all the tools and options available."

For its part, Deutsche Welle notes: "EU leaders have warned Turkey that it could face sanctions if it does not stop" provocations and pressures "(…) amid escalating tensions in relations with Ankara over ongoing research for oil and gas in the Eastern Mediterranean and its role in regional conflicts (…) The EU warning comes as calls within the 27 for a tougher stance against Turkey for its aggressive moves in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The article points out that the EU is adopting a "carrot and whip" tactic against Turkey with incentives and deterrents. "The incentives include a modernization of the customs union, closer trade ties and an improved EU - Turkey agreement on immigration. However, yesterday's statements by Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the Turkish National Assembly are also quoted, in which he described his country's operations in the Eastern Mediterranean as "the most important naval struggle of recent centuries" and described the EU as "ineffective, shallow". Erdogan says that the EU has become a "slave to the scams" of Greece and Cyprus ".
