Skoda Xanthi president kills two in car accident

Their car broke down and the two men started walking on the road, probably to seek help.
When the president of the Skoda Xanthi football club saw them, it was too late. He plowed into them wounding them mortally.
The accident took place on Thursday evening on a side road under the Egnatia Highway on the Konotini – Xanthi stretch. According to the press, two Pomaks aged 30 and 46 years old, were moving along an unlit stretch of the road that had low visibility, probably because of damage to their car.
Christos Panopoulos president of Skoda Xanthi football club was going to a ceremony honoring veteran Xanthi footballers, when he met up with the hapless victims. When he saw them he tried to swerve, but was unsuccessful, hitting and mortally wounding the two pedestrians.
Mr Panopoulos was arrested, but was released after orders from the prosecutor, until trial is set.
However, he remains at the General Hospital in Xanthi, in shock, where he was visited by team staff. Traffic police are looking into the details of the accident.
