Naxos Farm coop: Stock of famous isle potatoes exhausted
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The union of cooperatives on the large Cyclades Island of Naxos this week announced that all stocks of the eponymous potato cultivated on the isle have been exhausted, with a new crop expected no sooner than December 2022.
The same union warned consumers to tread carefully when seeing signs and ads for "Naxos potatoes".
Potatoes cultivated on the island enjoy a geographic protection indication, and are more popular than crops from other regions of Greece or from imports.
Potatoes cultivations are usually found in coastal plains on the island, and fertilized in a traditional manner.
More than 200 families are professional potato producers, with roughly 8,000 tons produced each year.
