Greek intel service cites case of ‘sleeper cell’ spy; attempt by third country to engage in ID theft

Greece’s national intelligence agency (EYP) on Thursday revealed details reminiscent of a “sleeper cell” spy caper, saying a woman identified as “Maria T.” had acquired a Greek state documentation and passed herself off as a photographer and owner of a haberdashery and crafts store.

The woman, who has not been arrested and apparently fled the country, is actually called “Irina A. S.” – at least according to the intelligence service – and first surfaced in 2018.

The suspect used identity theft related to a deceased person to create her profile. An attempt by a “third country” to harvest personal data of deceased Greek citizens ostensibly led Greek authorities to her trail.

EYP, in a rare announcement related to a case of espionage, said the specific type of spy is called an “illegal”, and trained to remain in deep cover.

Local media outlets subsequently reported that associates, friends, neighbors and even her companion were unaware that she was not the person she claimed, or even a foreign national.

With a valid Greek passport in hand the specific individual could also travel more freely to Schengen Pact countries in Europe.
