The next few weeks are critical for the Cyprus issue - Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting in New York

Featured The next few weeks are critical for the Cyprus issue - Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting in New York

The joint steps of Athens and Nicosia in the effort to restart the dialogue on the Cyprus issue, a few days before they will be at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where the meeting of the Greek Prime Minister with Tayyip Erdogan will also take place, will be confirmed during their meeting today in Maximos Mansion Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis.

Also on the agenda is the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project, where political will is required from both sides in order to overcome the obstacles that have arisen recently.

"It is a project of great importance, it also has great costs and, as you understand, the duty of every government is to fight, to claim for the correct distribution of costs. What does cost mean? It means a burden for each state. This is the obligation of a government towards the citizens", the government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis noted yesterday to SKAI, rejecting the allegations of Turkey's involvement and trying to avoid tension with Ankara.

On the contrary, for the Greek side, the thorn is the financial viability of the project and the need to make a clear commitment for the amount that Cyprus will cover in the next five years so that there is no excessive burden on Greek consumers. If these obstacles are overcome, the project will proceed quickly, government sources estimate, adding that "the geopolitical environment is not an inhibiting factor." Thus, a push on the part of the two leaders in today's meeting will be considered constructive in order to speed up the technical discussions between the two countries as well.

Critical weeks for the Cyprus issue
As far as the Cyprus issue is concerned, the next few weeks are characterized by diplomatic sources as critical, with the presence of all parties involved in New York between September 22 and 26 and contacts with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has personally taken charge of the restart effort of the conversations.

Greece and Cyprus have declared their readiness to contribute substantially to the effort for a sustainable solution, having a specific plan and proposals, which in any case will be based on the resolutions of the Security Council. "I have the feeling that the conditions have a favorable element. I feel that the position of Greece in the world, in view of the assumption of the position of non-permanent member of the Security Council for the next two years, our international footprint, the improvement of relations between Greece and Turkey, but also the active involvement and prioritization of the Cypriot in the context of the United Nations, they are a relatively fertile ground for us to be able to restart the debate. Division is never acceptable. But a solution will only come through the discussion", said Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Gerapetritis, yesterday.
