Pavlos Glücksburg: Will submit an application for citizenship - Voridis: He must choose a surname, not a title
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Pavlos, the firstborn son of the former King Constantine, is expected to appear at the Athens registry office by the end of the week to submit an application for the restoration of Greek citizenship, which he was deprived of in the 1974 referendum, as revealed today in a column of protothema.gr.
The procedure for doing this is provided for by the institutional framework of the Venizelos law from 1994, which includes a declaration in which anyone who applies must:
1. To declare respect and loyalty to the Constitution
2. To recognize the Presidential Parliamentary Democracy as the system of government and therefore accept the result of the 1974 referendum
3. To choose a surname
When asked about the issue, the Minister of State, Makis Voridis, initially said that "what I can say is that there will be no additional legislation. There is an institutional framework, the Venizelos law. There is nothing that prevents them from doing it. This has always been there, it is not new. The Venizelos law is there, as long as we do not change the framework, if someone wants to activate it, it is there".
When asked what will happen to the surname that Pavlos must choose, Mr. Voridis noted that "they have the opportunity to choose, according to the law the surname is an element of personality. The only issue with this particular family is that there are two "royal" families that do not have a surname, the others do. For example, in England the royal family has a surname. This particular one does not. Therefore, since we are talking about naturalization, there is an issue of identification. Paul of Constantine and Anna Maria, I imagine there is another one. In other Constitutions, titles of nobility are recognized. Here, from the Constitution, we have a ban on titles of nobility. Therefore, the adoption of a surname is an element of the identity of the individual."
Based on the Venizelos law, in fact, some peripheral members of the Glücksburg family have received Greek citizenship in the past.
It is noted that, according to information, Pavlos' mother, Anna-Maria, does not intend to proceed with the same application.
It is finally clarified that if Pavlos submits an application and is granted Greek citizenship, then all members of his family who are alive and want the same must also submit an application.
