Coast Guard officer injured in chase with traffickers
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
At midday on Thursday, a Coast Guard patrol boat, which was on a scheduled patrol, spotted a speedboat disembarking foreign passengers in the sea area of Agrilia, Lesvos. The speedboat then developed high speed heading towards the Turkish coast. The Coast Guard boat attempted to stop the speedboat using light and sound signals, with negative results.
A pursuit ensued, during which the speedboat performed dangerous maneuvers and attempted to ram the Coast Guard boat. During this process, the speedboat hit the Coast Guard boat from the side, resulting in the injury of one of its officers.
Subsequently, the speedboat was stopped and its two foreign operators, aged 31 and 25, were arrested. A second Coast Guard vessel also went to the scene in order to transport the injured officer to the port of Mytilene, from where he was picked up by an EKAB ambulance and taken to the Mytilene General Hospital “Vostaneio”, for the provision of first aid.
In land searches carried out in the wider area, 30 foreigners were identified by Hellenic Police officers, and were transferred to the Kara Tepe “Mavrovouni” detention center. The Central Port Authority of Mytilene, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, confiscated the means of transport and a switchblade 10 centimeters long, which the 25-year-old arrested in violation of Law. 2168/1993 "On weapons".
