School Closures, Ships Docked Amid Bad Weather in Greece
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Heavy snow, low temperatures, and gale-force winds in Greece have caused widespread disruption across Greece, leading to school closures and sailing bans in multiple regions.
School Closures Across Greece
In Macedonia, Thessaloniki, and Thessaly, schools are closed due to intense weather conditions.
Municipalities such as Meteora, Amphipolis, Amyntaio, Eordaia, Florina, Prespes, Sofades, and Domokos have issued orders to keep schools shut for the safety of students and staff.
In Halkidiki, schools in specific communities, including Stanos, Arnaia, and Megali Panagia, are closed, while other areas remain unaffected.
Ships Docked at Ports
The bad weather has also disrupted maritime travel, with gale-force winds in the Ionian and Aegean Seas reaching up to 9 Beaufort in some areas, as reported by the National Meteorological Service (EMY).
Sailing bans are in effect for the Arkitsa–Aidipsos, Kavala–Prinos Thasos, Alexandroupoli–Samothraki, and Rio–Antirrio routes. On the Keramoti–Limenas Thasos and Kyllini–Kefalonia lines, limited operations are permitted under strict conditions.
Despite the bans, ferries from Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio continue to operate normally. Authorities advise travelers to confirm schedules with local port offices and travel agencies, as modifications may occur due to the weather.
Officials urge caution to ensure public safety until the severe conditions subside, which is expected late on Tuesday.
