With the aim of strengthening cooperation with the country's authorities for the effective management of migration, the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, is traveling to Libya today (8/7).
Mr. Plevris is accompanying the EU Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, to Libya.
The European mission includes the Interior Ministers of Malta and Italy and will arrive in Libya for talks with officials from the country, both from the internationally recognized government in Tripoli and from Haftar's side in Benghazi.
The goal is to "put a brake" on illegal migration flows
The goal of the European mission is to coordinate with local authorities to prevent illegal migration flows, which have increased exponentially in recent times, as well as to improve procedures.
As ministry sources told thw official AMNA agency, the visit aims not simply to project power, but to actually cooperate with the Libyan authorities in order to control the flows.
Furthermore, the same sources report, this mission is part of a broader diplomatic and migration strategy of the Greek government with the aim of strengthening cooperation with Libya to limit irregular migration flows to Greece.
At the same time, it is part of a broader strategy by Greece to strengthen cooperation with countries of origin and transit of migrants, with the aim of effectively managing migration and protecting EU borders.
