Large landslide in Imerovigli, Santorini - What experts say

A terrifying cloud of dust covered Imerovigli, Santorini on Sunday, when a section of land suddenly collapsed, sweeping away everything in its path. The video recorded by residents and obtained by protothema.gr, captures the dramatic moments and highlights the serious dangers posed by overbuilding in a geologically unstable area. The images are impressive but also alarming: within a few seconds, the entire area was enveloped in a thick veil of dust, with residents and tourists watching in horror as the collapse unfolded.
According to experts, this particular piece of land is already heavily burdened by intense construction activity and is classified as a high-risk zone. As they explain, the fact that construction work was being carried out at the same time for the construction of a new building, in an area that is geologically unstable, also contributed to this landslide.
“Santorini is an island with vulnerable geomorphology, and when the pressure of overbuilding is added, the risk of landslides multiplies,” they emphasize, sounding the alarm. “Immediate measures to limit construction activity and strict controls are required to protect both the environment and human life.”
The video, shot by residents of Santorini, vividly highlights the limits of uncontrolled development on an island that is tested not only by excessive tourist pressure, but also by constant seismic activity. It is no coincidence that just last winter residents were forced to temporarily abandon their homes for fear of a major earthquake, which shows how fragile the balance on the island is. Experts emphasize that shielding such areas is necessary, as the phenomenon could be repeated with even more serious consequences.
