Police dissmantle Cretan mafia ring
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A sweeping police operation has dismantled a major criminal organization in Crete, leading to the arrest of 48 people, including an active-duty police officer, military personnel, and a clergyman, authorities announced.
The suspects face a host of charges, including trafficking cocaine and heroin, illegal weapons sales, extortion, bribery, and money laundering through legitimate businesses such as hotels and beach bars.
The months-long investigation was reportedly triggered by a January 2024 bombing that targeted a police officer's home.
According to police, two undercover officers infiltrated the network by posing as catering workers, gathering crucial intelligence through surveillance and wiretaps.
The alleged 36-year-old ringleader was caught on intercepted calls using coded language, referring to cocaine as "keys."
The investigation also uncovered alleged manipulation of church affairs by the accused clergyman, including illegal sales of church lands.
Defense lawyer Nikos Steiakakis described the case file as containing thousands of pages.
The case also has a political dimension, as former Defense Minister Panos Kammenos was reportedly recorded in a conversation with the alleged ringleader. Mr. Kammenos has denied any wrongdoing.
