The American College of Greece is filing for the establishment of a Legal Entity of University Education (L.P.E.E.), from Deree. According to the relevant announcement, the College is proceeding to strengthen its institutional presence with the creation of a university.

The announcement of the American College
On February 26, 2026, the American College of Greece (ACG) officially filed an application, in accordance with Law 5094/2024, for the establishment of Deree, The American University of Greece (Amerikanikon Panepsilonis Hellas), a Legal Entity of University Education (L.P.E.E.) in collaboration with Roger Williams University, based in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA.

This action aligns the long-established academic model of ACG with the state-established framework of university education, providing official recognition, within the national system, to an academic structure that has been operating for years at ACG.

The American College of Greece, founded in 1875, is the oldest and largest non-profit organization with American accreditation in Europe. Throughout its historical journey, the American College of Greece has operated with a consistent mission, international orientation and commitment to academic quality. Its steadfast commitment is to broaden the horizons of its students and their personal and professional development. The addition of Deree, American University of Greece N.P.P.E., to the existing higher education levels positions the American College of Greece in a position to offer state-recognized, university-level studies while maintaining its educational philosophy and high academic standards that characterize it.

Collaboration with the American University

The academic collaboration is carried out with Roger Williams University, which is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and is expected to strengthen Greece's position on the global map of higher education. With student mobility increasing internationally and academic systems becoming increasingly interconnected, Deree University will offer an authentic American university education, further supporting Greece's ambition to emerge as a pole of global higher education and mobility in the wider region.

At the core of the partnership is the ability to provide American-style university education through a fully regulated Greek institutional framework. The creation of the N.P.P.E. will facilitate the formal realization of this vision, offering students the opportunity to obtain an American university degree while studying in Greece.

In a statement, the President of the American College of Greece, Edward C. Wingenbach, PhD, said: “The academic partnership is with Roger Williams University, which is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and is expected to strengthen Greece’s position on the global map of higher education. With student mobility increasing internationally and academic systems becoming increasingly interconnected, Deree University will offer an authentic American university education, further supporting Greece’s ambition to emerge as a global hub of higher education and mobility in the wider region.”

The partnership is further strengthened by Deree’s educational philosophy, which is closely aligned with Roger Williams University’s commitment to interdisciplinary and experiential learning, active civic engagement, and the combination of professional preparation with a solid theoretical foundation.

Which schools will it have?

Pending licensing and program approval, Deree, American University of Greece N.P.P.E. will consist of 3 Schools (a. Management & Economics, b. Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, and c. Science & Technology) that will offer 24 undergraduate and one graduate degree programs in its first phase of operation. All academic programs lead to degrees awarded by an institution accredited by NECHE and licensed by the State of Rhode Island. As the Mario J. Gabelli School of Management at Roger Williams University is accredited by the internationally recognized Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Deree University's business degrees will also be accredited by AACSB.

True to the educational tradition and non-profit mission of the American College of Greece, Deree University will provide scholarships and financial support with the aim of ensuring access and rewarding excellence.
