45 flights canceled today from "El. Venizelos" due to developments in the Middle East

Featured 45 flights canceled today from "El. Venizelos" due to developments in the Middle East

Air transport problems are intensifying due to developments in the Middle East, especially since the airports affected are international hubs connecting wider destinations around the world with very large shares in international air connectivity.

For example, Dubai International Airport (DBX), which was hit, is the second busiest airport in the world, having welcomed a total of 95.2 million passengers in 2025, marking a historical record with an increase of 3.1% compared to 2024, with a total of 454,800 flights. India is the leading market in terms of international connectivity with 11.9 million travelers and London is the number 1 urban destination with 3.9 million travelers in 2025.

An indication of the extensive potential of the Dubai airport network, with Greek interest, is the fact that Emirates is the only airline that connects Athens with the USA throughout the year, winter and summer, on the Dubai - Athens - New York (Newark) route. In fact, the company has upgraded its aircraft to the destination since last year, at the same time that other (American) airlines maintain connections only within the framework of their summer programs, leaving out the low winter period where occupancy rates are clearly lower due to the high seasonality of Greek tourism.

Regarding today's flight cancellations at Athens Airport, "Eleftherios Venizelos" due to developments in the Middle East, the information speaks of 45 flights, concerning both arrivals and departures for today, March 1. The issue of the repatriation of Greeks who are in the affected areas is being handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the relevant platforms have also been opened.

For their part, the airlines, after the already announced flight cancellations, are constantly reviewing their plans, closely monitoring developments and referring to continuous updates. The largest domestic airline, AEGEAN, has canceled 10 flights today alone, either departures or arrivals from and to Tel Aviv, Erbil, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and another 10 are scheduled for tomorrow, March 2, while the possibility of extending the suspension of flights beyond March 3, as already announced, is being considered.

Similarly, the other domestic airline, SKY Express, has informed that, due to the closed airspace of Israel, scheduled flights in the connection with Ben Gurion International Airport have been canceled at least until Monday, March 2.

Developments are constantly being evaluated in accordance with the instructions of the competent aviation authorities and the companies will continuously make adjustments to their schedules for these specific routes.
