A Greek-owned ship is one of four that were hit near the Strait of Hormuz, at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, on Sunday.
The Greek-owned ship is Ocean Electra, a Medium Range 2, 47,377 dwt tanker flying the Liberian flag. It is registered to Greek company Antlia Navigation Ltd., managed and operated by Oceangold Tankers Inc., based in the Athens suburb of Vouliagmeni.\It has been reported that Ocean Electra has been hit by either a drone or missile. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or serious damage. Online navigation apps show the ship headed to Al-Hamriya port in Dubai.
A casualty was reported aboard vessel MKD Vyon, hit around noon near Oman; a crew member in the engine room was killed.
Spanish-flagged vessel Hercules Star was also hit, 20 nautical miles off the coast of United Arab Emirates. There is no other information about this incident.
Palau-flagged Skylight, struck 5 nautical miles off Oman, may have been hit by US forces. Skylight was on the US sanctions list as it was claimed to be a lookout ship monitoring ship movements on the Hormuz Strait on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Skylight’s crew of Iranian and Pakistani nationals abandoned the ship; there are reports of four injured crew.
Container shipper Maersk has announced that, for security reasons, it has suspended travel of its ships through the Hormuz Strait.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) advises ships to avoid the affected area.
On Saturday, Greece’s shipping ministry advised Greek-flagged vessels to exercise maximum vigilance and avoid the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz.
