Anonymous email took the Marfin case out of the archive - What did it reveal about the identity of the perpetrators?

According to information, the case was withdrawn from the file of unknown perpetrators, as the anonymous email mentioned by name three people as perpetrators of the arson attack that resulted in the tragic death of three bank employees, as well as other people who allegedly participated in the same group.

According to competent sources, the new information was assessed as important, and thus the relevant case file was “unfrozen” and removed from the file of unknown perpetrators.

The new investigation was also extended to other cases in which the three arrested people were mentioned.

From the comparison of the material of the case files that were not related to the Marfin tragedy and the new elements that were brought to the attention of the prosecution authorities, elements emerged such as the same attire, the same special characteristics, which led to the identification of the three involved.

The new elements were submitted to the 3rd regular investigator, who issued the three arrest warrants against the two 42-year-olds and the 46-year-old.

After 16 years, the Authorities found themselves faced with new data, which led them to issue three warrants. The two men were arrested in Kypseli and Chalandri, while the 46-year-old, against whom an international warrant was issued, allegedly had a supporting role and in recent years has been living in Britain. The two arrested are said to be active members of the anti-authoritarian space, while the 46-year-old is said to have distanced herself.

Marfin's crime occurred on 5.5.2010, when the country was entering the memorandum and the first memorandum measures were being voted on, and for this reason hundreds of thousands of people had taken to the streets to protest.

At noon that day, incidents broke out. Some threw Molotov cocktails inside Marfin, where there were employees. Three of them - Angeliki Papathanasopoulou, 32 years old and 4 months pregnant, Paraskevi Zoulias, 35 years old, and Epaminondas Tsakalis, 36 years old - were burned alive.

Arrests were made a year later. The arrested were brought to trial but were acquitted.
