Theodorakis reveals "River" supporters

In a press conference, on Tuesday, journalist and "The River" party founder Stavros Theodorakis revealed the first 30 personalities supporting his political initiative.

They come from all walks of life and profession and none of them is a career politician. Among them there are a few high profile names, like experienced writer Nikos Dimou, veteran journalists Tasos Telloglou and August Corteau, publisher Anastasia Lambria, actor Nikos Orphanos, economist Haris Mathiopoulos, various university professors, musicians, sportsmen and other professionals. Interestingly enough, in a statement in Facebook a couple of hours after the press conference, Corteau wrote that he did not have time to get involved with "The River", on account of his busy schedule.

The party's main slogan is “politics with no party affiliated history” and this list of supporters certainly justifies it. He has yet to release the party's candidates fro the upcoming European parliamentary elections, but he gave his definition of a successful candidate: polyglot, educated and knowledgeable on European affairs.

“The country's problems are not right or left wing and neither should the solutions”, he said. When quizzed about the political family with which his potential European MPs would integrate, he refrained from any committing answer.

Finally, he insisted on the only definitive political notion he has taken so far, in that his party will be seeking political consent and cooperation after the elections – apparently meaning his political capital would be available for a future coalition government.

The first response to this official presentation came from PASOK president and Foreign minister Evangelos Venizelos. During a press conference of his own about the situation in the Ukraine, he was deeply sarcastic. “All I can say is good luck to any TV show with ambitions of becoming a political party”, he said.
