Mermaid, general cargo ship, has been detained in Aabenraa (Denmark) by the Danish Maritime Authority, reported the largest maritime union in Denmark, CO-Maritime.
The vessel was arrested after the crew on board Mermaid had complained. The crew members on board the Greek-owned vessel did not have contracts for hiring. This violates the Maritime Labour Convention. The MLC is a part of a supervisory system since 20 August 2013.
A week ago, Mermaid had been in the Netherlands, but the problem wasn't caught.
The first ship detained for MLC violation was the offshore supply vessel Atlantic Carrie, registered in Liberia. The ship was detained by the Danish Maritime Authorities in September 2013 in the port of Esbjerg. The crew had no contracts.
Mermaid is a general cargo vessel built in 1985.The gross tonnage of the vessel is 1,856 gt, length 80.7 m and IMO 8504181. The ship is registered in Moldova.
