Greek road among deadliest globally

The road connects the villages of Patiopoulo and Perdikaki in Aitoloakarnania and is included in the list of the 12 deadliest roads compiled by British company Driving Experiences.

It's no secret that Greek roads are among the worst in the world. So finding one of them among the 22 deadliest in the world, was not exactly a big surprise. What is a surprise, is that few Greeks are aware of the location of the road.

The road in question connects the villages of Patiopoulo and Perdikaki in the Aitoloakarnania prefecture and is included in the list of the 12 deadliest roads compiled by British company Driving Experiences. The compilation takes into account the state of the road surface, potential absence of protective bars and the number of lives lost on these roads.

The list offers a degree of risk involved from 1 to 10, the latter being the most dangerous. The Greek road gets a 6 out of 10 in the Fear Factor section and is described as having “little traction because of loose pavement”, including “huge potholes”. It is also marked as particularly narrow, with many spots dangerous for a potential fall, no protective bars and no road signs.

It's not the first time this particular road is included in a list; it was among the 10 most dangerous roads in the Safe Travel Organization list. It is a reminder of the awful state of both country and city roads, usually abandoned in decades.

The worst road in the Driving Experiences list is the North Yungas road in Bolivia, infamous around the world as “the road of death”. It has received a degree of 10 and is also known as the absolute road to hell.

The second most dangerous road in the world according to the list is a 12 kilometer road crossing Fairy Meadows national park in Pakistan. In the other postions, we find the 48,000 kilometer Transamerican highway which runs from Alaska to South America, the Transsiberean road in Russia, the Commonwealth avenue in the Phillipines, the Skipper Canyon road in New Zeland and the Highway of Death (Rovodia de Morte) in Brazil.
