Prices fall, but Easter fare still beyond reach for many

The conclusion drawn from these random checks is that Easter table, specifically meat, vegetables and fruits, will be a little cheaper this year in comparison to last year.

According to figures, meat is approximately 4.51 percent cheaper, while the price of lamb is on average 5.26 percent cheaper as well. The prices of fruit and vegetables are also noting a decrease of approximately 2.18 percent. Potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and oranges are showing the largest decrease of almost 20 percent in comparison to last year.

However, although Easter table prices are on the fall, people seem unable to buy goods. Consumption in the Varvakeios Central meat market, downtown Athens is showing a notable fall, since the purchasing power of households has deteriorated significantly.
