This may not be the warmest May on record, and it's still just the beginning of the month, but the first large fire of the season already broke out at Daskalio Keratea, in Attica, catching authorities completely off guard.
The fire broke out, on Wednesday afternoon in an area with low vegetation. The fire department dispatched 25 fire fighters and 11 fire engines that were trying to stop the fires from reaching local dwellings.
The fire fighters are battling strong winds, of up to 6 on the Beaufort scale, and are hampered as the state has yet to issue a tender for the seasonal leasing of fire fighting helicopters.
